Conversational GenAI for argument analysis

History: making thinking visible

As you can tell from a quick scan of my site, I’ve spent a lot of time fascinated by how computers can make thinking visible (books Visualizing Argumentation and Knowledge Cartography), plus many papers and blog posts (on Argument Mapping and Dialogue Mapping), using experimental open source  software we built (such as Compendium and Cohere). A big picture account can be found in this 2007 keynote, Hypermedia Discourse: Contesting Networks of Ideas and Arguments.

So, all that’s to say that making arguments visible so that you and others can — in a very real sense — “see what you’re saying” has been a career-long passion. A key challenge in this long field of research has been that rigorous thinking is hard work. Bad luck, welcome to university! Argument Mapping and its related techniques use the affordances of visual trees/networks as an extended, external memory to augment personal and collective intelligence. Making one’s ideas visible as coherent diagrams is also hard work — but it’s good pain — the cognitive and discursive effort this entails is designed to clarify one’s thinking by revealing visually where the weaknesses are, in ways that writing and reading chunks of prose cannot tell you at a glance.

Enter NLP and rhetorical parsing

In 2012, we were now in the Web 2.0 era, and an exciting collaboration with NLP and linguistics expert Ágnes Sándor (Xerox) led to a new conception of Contested Collective Intelligence. For the first time in my work, machines could identify argumentative moves in sentences, complementing the argumentative moves that our web annotation tools enabled for people — who unlike machines, can of course can ‘read between the lines’ and see connections between ideas that may not even be in the texts.

This was extremely exciting, and the ideas and open source code carried through to our current Academic Writing Analytics project and web apps. I reflected  on the impact of encountering NLP colleagues, in the context of The Future of Text book.

Conversational generative AI

And so we arrive at generative AI based on large language models, which advances the state of the art in language processing and generation in so many ways. Moreover, the conversational paradigm, when a chat application is overlaid, opens so many interesting human-computer/personal-collective intelligence possibilities. I’ve been intrigued to play with GPT-4 to see what its argument analysis capabilities are.

Previously, I’ve shared some early experiments on ChatGPT-3.5’s ability to identify implicit premises in prose arguments, and critique a flawed argument by analogy. I’ve now had the chance to experiment a little with the version of GPT-4 that is Bing Chat, accessed via Microsoft Edge browser. I was dying to see how far I could get in generating an Argument Map from a written argument.

The task is a typical analysis workflow, as prep for teaching:

  • search for relevant sources
  • select one for analysis
  • extract key elements of the argument and their relationships (described using a structured markdown notation called ArgDown)
  • diagram them to show their key relationships (in the ArgDown web app)
  • discuss (with the AI)
  • start thinking about student activities to help them learn

I don’t mind admitting that watching a machine do this for the first time was startling! I tell the story here…

Deeper dive

Let’s take a closer look at what Bing Chat did, because it wasn’t perfect.

  • The gold stars signal what in my view are good summaries of what the authors said, correctly linked.
  • The blue info circles are “commentary” from Bing Chat about the arguments
  • The red crosses signal that the authors did not say this, it is a false reconstruction by Bing Chat.
  • The red underline signals classification of a premise using incorrect, or indeed made-up argument schemes. There is to my knowledge no such argument type as Argument from responsibility, or Argument from precaution. Argument from omission seems to be a jumbling of Fallacy of omission and Argument from ignorance. 

If we take this node for example, it reads well as a summary:

However, the authors do not talk about researchers at all, they say:

“The letter addresses none of the ongoing harms from these systems, including 1) worker exploitation and massive data theft to create products that profit a handful of entities, 2) the explosion of synthetic media in the world, which both reproduces systems of oppression and endangers our information ecosystem, and 3) the concentration of power in the hands of a few people which exacerbates social inequities.”

As an amusing sidenote, Bing Chat was curiously resistant to recognising this, insisting that it was correct, first “quoting” a fabricated passage from the article to me, and then saying that this implied that the authors meant researchers. I thought that this sort of stubbornness had been ironed out after Bing Chat’s earlier escapades! More seriously, this points to the value of dialogic learning, with a partner who can be conversed with 24/7 — but who must still be treated with some caution, certainly at this stage of maturity.

To summarise:

  • Bing Chat showed intriguing capability, for a machine, to analyse an argumentative article:
    • extracting the key claim and underlying premises, summarising them in own words
    • generating markdown (ArgDown) showing supporting/challenging relationships
    • (and without being asked to) attempting to classify some nodes using Walton’s Argumentation Schemes.
  • However it also introduced fallacious nodes (incorrect summaries of the authors, and incorrect commentary nodes), incorrect links, and argument classifications (inventing argument types, and/or misclassifying nodes).

This is an exploratory example, and more systematic evaluations are required, of the sort we see in the growing Argument Mining literature.

Reflections

It does feel to me that we’ve turned a corner in the long, wintry history of AI. Perhaps this is a passing summer, which will fade like the others. But in my own career, punctuated by eureka moments such as seeing my first Apple Mac, my first web page load, and an iPhone — this is up there.

University is to teach you to think. Argument analysis is serious intellectual work, of the sort that we would hope to see from our students. Nor is there always “one map to rule them all’ — a correct map, since like in spatial cartography, design decisions are made about scale and purpose. The point about knowledge cartography is that it provokes productive reflection and discourse. So even if the AI gets the map wrong (and it will), the conversation this should provoke should be useful. With colleagues Kirsty Kitty and Andrew Gibson, I’ve argued that embracing imperfection in tech can be productive if it promotes deeper critical thinking in learners, e.g., learning by correcting the automated output, or reflecting on questions it asks, or why it seems wrong. Students must, however, be scaffolded to engage in such activity.

Informal learning? This is feasible in formal education, but may be less attractive in other informal learning contexts where we want to promote critical deliberation, e.g.  citizens engaged in a policy deliberation, many of whom lack the internal or external motivation to think that hard. But assuming future tools give more accurate argument maps/outlines, that require less debugging, perhaps we can see use-cases including:

  • assisting facilitators/educators to prepare learning resources for civic deliberations
  • assisting very engaged citizens to dissect complex arguments, and perhaps lowering the entry threshold for others who might otherwise not engage with such structured, critical deliberation
  • an article is very different to a multi-author conversation, but we can envisage summarising online discussions (NB: Teams is starting to summarise topics and actions in meeting transcripts)

Did we just supplant student cognition? From a learning sciences perspective, an overriding concern with generative AI is that it does too much cognitive work for the learner. Editing an AI-generated draft is not the same as wrestling with the blank page yourself. Ditto for reviewing an AI-generated argument map.

I have just done what many professionals have enjoyed doing in recent months: putting GPT through its paces to test its technical capability. But learners are not professionals: they don’t know what they don’t know. As I argue elsewhere, they may lack the knowledge, skills and dispositions to engage critically with AI output. They will require suitable scaffolding from mentors and teachers to learn what we mean by critical thinking and argument analysis, in order then to be equipped to use a power tool such as an argument mapping tool. Much empirical research awaits to test the affordances of generative AI like this, to establish when they are most useful to use developmentally, with a given age/stage of learner.

But we do know that argument mapping has struggled to gain traction (in formal education and among professionals) because it’s hard intellectual work. It could be that by generating full or intentionally incomplete argument maps, AI provides a step up for many learners to quickly get feedback on their work, or see examples of arguments about topics they are knowledgeable about — and thus better equipped to critique — compared to examples chosen by the teacher or textbook. Generative AI may open new possibilities because it can generate examples tuned to the interests of each learner, activating their curiosity to go deeper.

The craft + tech of structuring participatory deliberation

RSA kickoff webinar on deliberation

As a Fellow of the RSA I’m happy to draw attention to the important new series of webinars just launched, on the critical role that effective, participatory deliberation has to play in resolving complex challenges, even apparently intractable dilemmas — at many different scales, from an organisation, to a local community, city, regional or even international scale.

As happens sometimes, I ended discovering a colleague at my own university doing fantastic work! Check out Nivek Thompson and her Deliberately Engaging portal. In prepping some notes for her, I thought I might as well blog them in case of wider interest to this community.


Hypermedia Discourse

A lot of my work has investigated a particular way in which software can help make thinking visible, the focus of all my work. Such tools seek to “augment human intellect” in Doug Engelbart‘s memorable words (my tribute to his inspiration for my work, and what he thought about this [Visualizing Argumentation]).

Here are some examples of how this works:

  • Make aspects of the conversational structure visible. Once a phenomenon is visible, rendered in a visual language that provides helpful ways to reflect on what is unfolding, it can be talked about, and is an “improvable object”. The Hypermedia Discourse project prototyped and evaluated the potential of combining models of dialogue and argumentation, with hypertext functionality for connecting issues, ideas, arguments and documents. Since we were interested in discourse about wicked problems, differences in perspective were the default starting point.
  • Support online forum moderators/facilitators assess the health of the conversation. A well designed user interface helps online participants to structure their contributions in ways that can provide the software with new ways to check the state of the debate (not possible with conventional flat chats, or threaded forums), and reflect this back to participants and/or moderators (see the Catalyst project for example).
  • Help to track ideas. Hypertext systems (more powerful than the Web) provide flexible ways to keep track of ideas (nodes), not just information. Anna De Liddo’s doctoral research is an example of how this can provide new forms of accountability in the participatory process ((in her work, for participatory urban design).

An important strand of our work was examining the facilitator skillset and disposition required to make good use of visualizations in real time, to augment the deliberation. Spearheaded by Al Selvin’s doctoral research, this led to a book that set out the concept of Knowledge Art.


Collaborative Evidence-based Problem-Solving

More recent work led by Tim van Gelder at Melbourne University (an Argument Mapping philosopher and software entrepreneur) has broken new ground in a particular niche of the design space: how do you convene a team of citizens to tackle a complex problem, with the challenge of devising an evidence-based, plausible analysis of the best way forward?

They have just published exciting results demonstrating that some teams of volunteers recruited via Facebook performed as well as, and in some cases better than, teams of professional intelligence analysts. The emergence of NLP to detect critical, reflective writing

Natural Language Processing (NLP) has in recent years emerged from the AI labs into the mainstream. This has been a recent focus of my work, in the context of giving students instant feedback on their drafts. This has yet to be deployed in the context of participatory deliberation, but here are some preliminary reflections on where the automated detection of shallow and deeper reflection might assist participants posting online to reflect on how they are reacting to challenges — from other people, or the turbulent life events that are threatening dearly held assumptions, and ways of life.

Might the growing potential of NLP to make sense of rich, narrative prose offer the optimal combination in years to come — playing to the respective strengths of machines and humans to make sense of the world?


Power tools (and new literacy?) for deliberation professionals?

I remain excited about the potential of interactive, usable visualizations to help tackle the limitations of individual and collective human cognition. I have also seen first hand how hard it is for people to learn to structure their thinking more carefully than firing off their thoughts in the usual way. The role of the deliberation facilitator can be absolutely critical to modelling and scaffolding stakeholders into more reflective modes of reflective dialogue and rigorous argumentation.

That provides the basis for a good conversation with the growing international networks of deliberation experts who will also be working increasingly in online or hybrid modes.

Online Deliberation 2010

Online Deliberation 2010 moves out of the US for the first time this year, coming to Leeds UK… looks to be a very good gathering, and handy not to have to hop over the water. Come and OD!

The widespread diffusion of the Internet and a growing trend towards democratisation worldwide have encouraged new modes, projects and visions of citizen participation in decision making and governance.

OD2010 aims to bring together researchers, developers and practitioners from a wide range of academic and applied backgrounds to provide a unique opportunity to better understand the notion of deliberation in a virtual environment and to discuss specific advances in online deliberation from a number of different disciplinary perspectives.

The conference is aimed at those who wish to update themselves on recent developments in online deliberation, understand how other groups are applying the tools and techniques and exchange ideas with leading international experts.

OD2010 follows the traditions of previous high-level scientific conferences. It is organized by key experts in the field and is supported by a multidisciplinary programme committee. This is the first time the conference has been held outside the USA.

The fourth OD conference focuses on, but is not limited to, the following topics:

  • current research on online deliberation;
  • research challenges which deliberation, and in particular online deliberation, pose for researchers, governments, communities and citizens;
  • socio-technical design of online deliberative spaces;
  • links between theories of deliberative democracy with experience with online deliberation;
  • descriptions of tools and techniques that are already being tested or fielded;
  • deliberative platforms using novel or unusual settings, technology or approaches;
  • experiences and findings related to relevant technological theories (such as Web 2.0) and/or relevant social theories of deliberation and governance (such as public sphere, government 2.0 and civic intelligence); and
  • case studies in applying and evaluating online deliberation in various formal and informal engagement domains.

Knowledge mappers empower e-democracy?

Background

Horst Rittel‘s IBIS scheme for argumentative dialogue was designed to scaffold participatory inquiry around wicked problems such as urban planning, with messy social, political and technical dimensions (2 key papers). Jeff Conklin‘s gIBIS (graphical IBIS) tool was one of the pioneering hypertext prototypes from the late 1980s. This used the exciting new graph layout capabilities of high-end workstations which only researchers got to play with in those days.

Our Compendium hypermedia knowledge mapping tool is the direct descendant of gIBIS, and our interoperable Cohere tool moves this into the Web 2.0/3.0 sphere. Meanwhile, other groups have developed Web tools around IBIS, which seems to be emerging as the lingua franca for lightly-structured deliberation tools (Debategraph; MIT’s Deliberatorium; others…) which go beyond simple commenting or threaded discussions. Participatory Urban Planning has, not surprisingly, continued to be a prime applications testbed for Compendium.

As well as innovating on the technical side, the core question on which we continue to work with Jeff and many others, is how to use such visualizations to genuinely add value to face-face and asynchronous dialogue, debate and deliberation over courses of action.  Since the emergence of gIBIS and other hypertext mapping tools 20 years ago caused the initial flurry of excitement with the Hypertext, HCI, CSCW and Design Rationale research communities, the widespread perception has been that these never really ‘took’, and embedded into everyday practice. However, the substantial body of work that has now been done to articulate the practices that make such tools effective (reviewed here, plus Jeff Conklin’s work on Dialogue & Issue Mapping and Al Selvin‘s work on the practice of Knowledge Art) has led to a significant user community, as this post helps to illustrate.

From a tech query to some bigger questions

This started out as a technical query to the Compendium Institute‘s discussion forum, about supporting a community planning inquiry. Subscribe to the forum if you want to follow the thread.

I’m trying to make IBIS maps of a local environmental-vs-property rights issue available to residents of my community in a form that will allow them to comment easily. My idea is to prepare a set of issue maps in Compendium, export them as Web Maps, and tinker with the HTML of the Web Maps so that when those pages are clicked on, the users are taken to a form with blanks to enter additional comments, optional email address, etc., and a “Send” button to send this all to me. I will then be able to read their remarks and figure out how to add them into the map.

Trouble is, I have no idea of how to write a script to do this. I am a complete newbie to scripting.  [snip…]

Here’s an extended version of my reply. The options are hopefully of interest to others engaged in the practicalities of supporting e-participatory projects. But you can see it leads into some bigger issues of interest to those of us now wrestling with how we provide the sociotechnical infrastructures needed to enable the higher order Collective Intelligence needed to tackle wicked problems (eg. yesterday’s CI workshop here at CSCW).

I can see 3 options for enabling community members to engage with Issue Maps in Compendium:

1. Forget a technical extension

In the name of speed (you say you have little time and no programming skills), and simplicity (for respondents) — just get them to email you (or come round your house and sit with a coffee around a big printout!) The key value you already bring is as cartographer: mapping the state of the debate, and acting as a translator of new responses, succinctly summarising and connecting contributions. If every node was numbered manually by you, then you might prompt them to provide the relevant node number(s).

By the way, whatever solution you go for, sticking one or more poster(s) of it on the wall at the meeting might work well as a low-tech/hi-touch way of engaging people — around the largest format, highest resolution display available on the market 😉  Tim van Gelder describes the successful debate poster he posted on the wall of a company in an industrial dispute case study:

2. Link to a web survey tool

If you can’t face lots of emails, provide a single link to a free web survey site like Survey Monkey. It could have just one question! (and invite people to provide the node number)

I guess you could create a web survey question for each core issue to provide finer granularity, or even for every node. But going finer grained might cause you trouble — everytime you add a new node, the expectation would be that there would be a new, specific link from the issue map to the survey for it, which could get you into a version/maintenance nightmare. This might work for any map that wasn’t going to evolve rapidly, however.

3. Add a technical extension

Compendium:

I don’t think you’ll be able to do this quickly without tech help. What you are asking for sounds pretty much like the Web Compendium prototyped as a fuller solution by GlaxoSmithKline. They wanted a simplified, intranet, web-only user experience in the IE browser, and built quite a complete solution. (However, they didn’t have a moderator in the loop)

They demo’d this at the 2005 Compendium Institute workshop (see p5 of the PDF proceedings). Note: their slides are linked from the web map (but all web map exports from this era are now only interactive in Apple’s Safari browser, due to a change in other browsers’ code).

We never got to fold this into a main release in the end, focusing instead on enabling distributed Compendium over the net (avail in the forthcoming v2.0 beta release), and Cohere, while others developed IBIS web tools like DebateGraph and Deliberatorium.

Web IBIS tools:

You’ve said you don’t think DebateGraph provides the layout control and look+feel you want. You can try Cohere, though this may not be quite right for you yet either. Here’s an example Cohere IBIS discussion. This lets anyone signed in connect new nodes to maps.

However, this excludes you from the loop as moderator of contributions, where you add Issue Mapping expertise, and this is a key value add.

A knowledge mapping cadre empowers democracy?

It’s an interesting question whether it is more empowering for a community to be able to say what they want directly in IBIS (with the risk that this just descends into IBIS-flamewars because they lack the skills of good listening and critical engagement), vs. going through a facilitator (whom one hopes, they have learnt to trust) who maintains the hygiene of the map. This is just a version of some of the oldest questions about democracy: using a more highly skilled elite group, to empower all by acting as a control over excesses – which if done badly, turns into silencing.

Another approach is to devise better methods and schemes for scaffolding debate, such as Jack Paulus’ TruthMapping, which claims to reduce the possibility for poor contributions without any supervision from a moderator, but at the cost of requiring more critical reflection from contributors — this is an overhead that “normal” members of the public, especially hot-headed ones of the sort you refer to in your community context, may not be willing or able to make.

Is a more expert group of knowledge curators always going to be needed?

In yesterday’s Collective Intelligence workshop, we had a breakout group specifically around the key  challenges for CI in tackling wicked problems. I summarised some of the points as follows, flagging the first point in the context of this post:

The holy grail seems to be the self-organising/maintaining sociotechnical CI infrastructure whereby no-one does anything much extra beyond what they need to do for their own work, and CI emerges “for free”. But we may be deluding ourselves when it comes to the higher order collective cognition that wicked problems require. Maybe we will always need a tier of knowledge curators to tune and maintain the hygiene of a CI resource?

Other points are appended at the end. This seems to be a central issue that we have to address. For example, some of the debate maps that David Price has created have attracted significant coverage and attention, and are demonstrating that members of the public can contribute to an issue map which grows, and maintains coherence, without moderation. However, David has played a key role in seeding those maps — a key role to get things going, and I believe that there are areas of the map that could now benefit from “curation” (Perhaps I can invite David to comment, and Mark Klein on experiences with Deliberatorium?). Certainly, we know from Wikipedia and many other user generated content sites that there are important social dynamics by which members rise in the ranks to become editors with different roles and permissions.

So, it may be that we shouldn’t be “ashamed” to admit that a cadre of skilled issue/debate mappers is a key element in the architecture of participation around authentic, participatory e-democracy. We recognise the need for accountants to help us manage complex financial assets. No-one thinks it strange that cartography is a highly skilled profession, necessary to manage the complexity geographical spaces for society’s needs. Thus, Knowledge Cartographers may be the new craft, guild, or profession that we need to cope with the complexity of conceptual spaces, as we manage intellectual assets.

Other notes from the CI wicked problems breakout group:

  • Sometimes there is a decision to be made, but much of the time it’s about sensemaking to just track the changing environment.
  • Such problems fundamentally require building common ground across diverse stakeholders – empathy with others needed as a backdrop for critical debate/argumentation. Lots of work on how we foster genuine dialogue.
  • Social media may have an important role to play in making antagonists into real people (co-location helps with this, virtual co-location may help) – social capital
  • How to accelerate the building of common ground – meosphere provides lists to select from – cf. Hive5 lists as a precursor to team building
  • A UX challenge is helping users to move from very low effort contributions (eg tagging; rating) to higher cost, more informative ones (connecting; explaining) – we may be able to go back to users to invite more input. eg. on something they’ve said/tagged
  • Patty Hinds (Stanford) – cross-site visiting helped improve distributed programming, since it filled in gaps about people
  • Can be critical to work from the specific domain representations as the start of common ground.
  • Mapping from science to policy/practice is often key (cf. Simone paper on the different “cosmologies”) – we see this in medecine, urban planning, environmental policy, etc etc — a significant mapping/contextualisation task

e-Democracy debate: 12 years on…

Great to see Tony Hirst dismembering the Digital Britain Interim report and  reassembling it on the WordPress-powered  WriteToReply blog, supporting paragraph-specific comments from the public whom the report wishes to consult.

But wait a minute… <swirly timewarp venetian blind transition*> 1997, The Dearing Report is published on the Future Of Higher Education, and… we dismember and reassemble it to enable paragraph-specific comments from the public whom the report wishes to consult.   * hey, it’s Friday evening!

This time though, instead of a nice Web 2.0 tool downloaded for free and hosted in the cloud, we’ve employed a programmer for 6 months to write a Java desktop toolkit to process an HTML document in order to generate a frames-heavy document discussion environment called D3E [sourceforge / screencasts] which hypertextualises the Dearing Report, generating an automated contents list, bibliographic reference links, and a comment icon inserted next to each new heading and paragraph, which links to the corresponding thread in a customised HyperNews forum. I even managed to Google a screenshot of it, since I lost all mine. I love ‘old’ web screenshots: they speak volumes about their era.

Now, the interesting thing of course is to ask, what’s new, and what’s not?

  • On the technical front, attaching interactive commentaries to sections in a document no longer feels groundbreaking. It kinda did in the mid-90s. It’s now nice and easy to set up, and possibly easier to use. Good stuff. And of course, there are feeds coming off it, and Tony cunningly used Twitter to raise enough interest to rapidly get mainstream media coverage. Not possible in 97. Our Hypertext Godfathers have left their legacy. Engelbart’s paragraph-level link referencing is used in both systems, but Nelson’s transclusions have only found everyday reality with Web 2.0 feeds and embed code, enabling WriteToReply contributions to tunnel through the net to myriad unknown sites.
  • On the political front, we have to ask will it make a difference? For the Dearing exercise, we had Diana Laurillard, a member of the National Inquiry into the Future of HE and a senior person at the OU, who could take the online contributions and feed them into its deliberations. WriteToReply’s Open Letter to Lord Carter and the ‘Digital Britain – Interim Report’ Team is one way to raise the stakes, and increase the motivation of the public to contribute via this channel. And that is surely the societal dimension to e-Democracy tools such as this. The scare commodity is attention, so what  decides whether one channel will receive the eyes on it that are required to give it authority?

In 1997, I was reflecting on D3E, and trying to conceive what came next. How should we evolve from what was essentially the chunking of a traditional document into hypertextual pieces with traditional threaded commentary hanging of them, into… whatever should come next? Drawing on the foundational work of the hypertext research community into graphical ‘browser-based hypermedia’, such as PARC’s NoteCards and MCC’s gIBIS, I became convinced that the future was to layer semantic webs of interpretation over the vanilla Web, and to be able to filter and visualize them in order to see the conceptual structure of the ideas and arguments that conventional prose hides.Why can’t the platform tell me something about the logical structure of this debate, not just show me chronologically structured postings?

That evolved into our Hypermedia Discourse tools like Compendium, ClaiMaker, ClaimSpotter and now Cohere. These feel like the wall scatchings of cavemen, struggling to give birth to a new medium and literacy — but in 12 years’ time…

Meantime, all power to you Tony. I hope that we may now be in an era where the crowd really can, through intelligent swarming, build not only critical mass but critical comment with tools such as this. And yes, let’s try and figure out what you get when you mix WriteToReply with Cohere and simmer for 30mins 😉

Dr Anna De Liddo!

Congratulations to Anna De Liddo, who passed her PhD viva with flying colours today! Her thesis “A Process Memory Platform to Support Participatory Planning & Deliberation” is collaborative work with Dept. di Architecttura e Urbanista, Politecnico di Bari, and KMi’s Hypermedia Discourse group.

The viva panel were impressed with the originality of the research, and the scientific rigour with which it had been approached.

Abstract:

The communicative turn in planning theory argues that knowledge in planning is a social construction, emphasizing that knowledge is built in social contexts, by a plurality of actors, through their interactions. This new understanding of knowledge is built around the need of plurality of reasons and voices to inform and legitimate planning actions.

However this knowledge is often difficult to capture and integrate within the wider knowledge base that planners generate in the planning process. The body of knowledge guiding and supporting the planning process is captured in distributed fragments that come from a combination of present and past information, facts, people and artefacts produced by dispersed decision-processes. This knowledge fragmentation and distribution hampers, and often impedes, transparent and coherent decision-making processes in participatory planning practices.

The thesis addresses the challenge of transparent knowledge integration, focusing on the definition of new methods and tools to handle and integrate planning knowledge in order to trace how design decisions develop to create a planning process memory.

An information architecture is proposed to represent and manage participatory planning knowledge, and a multimedia tools platform has been designed to represent how knowledge evolves within this software environment.

This work is evaluated through multiple, real planning case studies, in order to test both the methodological aspects (application of the information architecture for knowledge acquisition and representation) and the tools (Compendium, CoPe_it! and FM).

Evidence is given of how the information architecture coupled with the use of a hypermedia visual Knowledge Management System (hvKMS) (Compendium) offers a valuable support to managing knowledge in Participatory Planning. In particular the information architecture enables effective representation of knowledge fragments in different dimensions according to their relevance to different contexts. This implies two grades of benefits: i. discovering knowledge connections and impacts across contexts; ii. having a thematic but holistic view and understanding of the process memory.

Furthermore, the case studies show that the tools are easy to use, flexible and customizable. Several examples are given of how the tools can support the tracing and representation of planning processes which differentiate for method, task, scale, planning phase and stakeholders involved.

As a final result of the platform and method testing, the thesis discuss three facets of a process-memory platform for planning practices at the technical, political and community levels. A critical analysis of the results is presented regarding limitations of the platform and, starting from this consideration future work and system evolution will be envisioned, recalibrating objective and strategy to new research challenges.
